Greetings and Welcome to Native Educational Endeavors, Inc. Blog!
We hope to engage our visitors in a spirited, candid and most importantly constructive dialog about concerns, issues and controversies involving American Indian education and cross-cultural respect. WE WANT TO KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS, FEELINGS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IDEAS.
Our first question seeks to create a constructive discussion about the nature of the Native American high school dropout crisis and what you are aware has been done to attempt to address it.
“American Indian and Alaska Native students have a dropout rate twice the national average; the highest dropout rate of any United States ethnic or racial group. About three out of every ten Native students drop out of school before graduating from high school both on reservations and in cities.” American Indian Education, Northern Arizona University, http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~jar/AIE/Dropouts.html (2010),
Do you agree there is an ongoing crisis with American Indians dropping out of high school? (Is this just a statistical inaccuracy involving actual Indians, tending to be a very mobile group?)
If there is a problem, how should it be addressed? (Will one solution work for all Tribal peoples, whereever they are found?)
Are you aware of any success stories, whether individuals or programs?
Thank you, and remember the common native axiom phrased in differing ways but always emphasizing: we are all connected.
